Rachael Yamagata & Ray LaMontagne

Thanks to a fellow Malaysian fan, ChesC, I was made aware of this beautiful song sung by TWO of my most favourite sultry-voiced crooners.

The merging of the voices: SUPERB.

Now if only the movie NEW MOON (Twilight Sequel) actually picked it up for one of its soundtrack then it'll be perfect. I'm sure most tweens nowadays would go 'Huh? Who?' at the mere mention of their names but atseriously I think mainstream music world should discover the beauty that is Rachael Yamagata and Ray LaMontagne. I personally believe that their talent is not fully appreciated by the music world even though their music and lyrics are to die for.

So for now relax... and enjoy the sheer beauty of this song.

Alahai Mak Datin Oi...

Datin-datin sekalian...

What is it with you people? Jadi Datin tu best sangat ke? Gah sangat ke sampai antara kengkawan baik sendiri pun kene bahasa-kan diri as Datin? Nama yang dianugerahkan oleh mak bapak korang tu tak cukup bagus ke? Bila kengkawan sendiri pun jadi Datin, dok sesama panggil each other Datin camne korang differentiate antara satu sama lain? Saya tak paham... bebetul tak paham.

Wahai mak Datin...

Do you think people care that you're a mak Datin? Do you think people actually give a damn to know that they're sitting next to a Datin when they're having a lovely meal at a nice restaurant with family and friends? Tak payah la nak cakap kuat-kuat. Kami kat sebelah je. Boleh dengar you all menjerit-jerit panggil each other "Datin". Reality check mak Datin oi... orang pergi restaurant sebab nak enjoy makanan yang dihidangkan bukannya nak mencari alasan nak jumpa memana orang yang kononnya "berpangkat". And yes, people without the "pangkat" nowadays can afford to go to the places that you go to too. You're not the only one with the money nowadays.

Oh mak mak datin sekalian...

Is it wrong for me to wear something casual to a kenduri? Granted la I was supposed to wear baju kurung since it was an Islamic thing but salah ke aku memakai seluar? Not an inch of my aurat was exposed. Betapa teringinnya hati tak ber"pangkat" aku ni nak tuding jari kat jambul korang tu and your jarang figure-hugging kebayas and say 'Sedar tak korang di mata pandangan Tuhan, you're the one that's underdressed'. Mau terjojol biji mata korang kalau aku cakap macam tu. But I didn't say that. I may not have a title but I was brought up with dignity. I need to respect my elders. Emphasis on the word elders ye. Sedarlah wahai datin-datin oi, kebaya jarang are only flattering to those whose skin don't sag.

Datin...

Bukannya saya tak respect you. But you're making it too easy for me to NOT respect you. Ingatlah sikit, pangkat Datin tu bukannya anugerah. You dapat pun secara proxy. All because you married a guy who was good enough to be given the honour of Dato/ Datuk or rich enough to buy himself that particular title. Lain la kalau you yourself have the honour to carry the Dato' / Datuk title in front of your name like Datuk Zeti Akhtar Aziz or Datuk Siti Nurhaliza. In cases like that, you don't have to demand people's respect. You'll get it just like that.

So sedarlah diri sikit wahai warga-warga Datin sekalian. Jangan nak menyombong diri di atas perkara-perkara kecil seperti title tu. It's what you make of that title that will give you the respect that a mak Datin deserves. As Shakespeare said it 'A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet', so even if you don't have the Datin title but you contribute to the people then in their hearts you are a deserving Datin.

You dig?

Koko Kaina / Zee Avi

*pic credit to takemeonline.blogspot

Following Fynn's reccomendation, I decided to check out another local indie musician Koko Kaina who now goes by the name of Zee Avi. And again, twice in the same week, I was blown away by this girl's sheer talent.

Dayyum!!! The voice on this girl.

So naturally I became an instant fan. I am now a subscriber to her Kokokaina Channel on Youtube and has also signed up to be in her mailing list at her official Zee Avi website. So yeah, I gotta give a shoutout to Fynn: I owe you one!! Am loving like this girl like mad!

So how talented is she?? So talented that she’s been picked up by Jack Johnson’s music label, Brushfire Records. Brushfire manager Emmett Malloy calls her a cross between Norah Jones and Billie Holliday. She's currently recording her debut at the Solar Power Plastic Plant, Brushfire's home studio in L.A. Backing her are Jack Johnson's band: drummer Adam Topol, bassist Merlo Podlewski and keyboardist Zach Gill. With a group of talents backing her up like that you know her album is gonna be a bomb.

She's already made her debut with Brushfire records through their christmas album with the song "No Christmas for Me". Aside officially being the first Malaysian singer to be part of the Brushfire Records roster, She's also the first female! This is the video for her "No Christmas for Me" single. Check it out.

However still no word on when her album is going to be out but rest assured, as soon as it is out I'm gonna be the first to lay my hands on it!!

Formerly a part of Damien Rice's act, Lisa Hannigan has broken free and now debuts her solo album "Sea Sew". Been a fan of hers since her Damien Rice days, and her latest single "Lille" does not disappoint. Check out the official music video for "Lille". Wouldn't you love to have a pop-up book just like that? I'd have hours and hours of fun. (Yes, I know I'm over 20)

Learn more about the lady with the velvety voice on her official website: Sea Sew.

Yuna - local IT indie girl

I have just discovered Malaysia's local 'it' indie scene girl. Yuna, an amazing singer/ song writer. Totally reminiscent of Fiona Apple, Rachael Yamagata and Alanis Morissette.

Yeah, I know am lightyears 'ketinggalan zaman' but I have never been much of a follower of the local indie scene. Aside from the usual indie-gone-mainstream kinda bands like Meet Uncle Hussain and Hujan, I'm totally clueless on who's who in the Malaysian indie music scene. Not that I don't appreciate the indie scene but Malaysian iindie music before this were the type that made my ears itch and my skin crawl. For a person who appreciates lyrics those kind of bands were the bane of my existence. Then came the bands who were heavily influenced by the Indonesian indie music scene. Whew! My ears now rest easy.

So when I suddenly discovered Yuna, totally by chance ( I was actually surfing for online shops :P), I was totally blown away. She plays the type of music that I liked. That I listened to. That I enjoyed. It was totally a dream come true. Not only she has a great voice, her lyrics are superb! And the best part part was the fact that her pronunciation for English songs was perfect! I can never stand local performers butchering an English song through their pathetic pronunciation. I just can't help myself. I am an English language major after all.

Here's Yuna performing my favourite song, Deeper Conversation. Check out her other songs: Rocket, Dan Sebenarnya, Missing a Star, Polaroid etc. Her EP is already out but only sold at various stores around KL.

  1. THE SUPERSUNDAY Concept store. How to go there?
  2. Wondermilk. 41 Jalan SS21/1A Damansara Utama (same row as TM Point and IACT college)
  3. The Dolls Store. 87 Basement , Jln Bulan, Bkt Bintang , Kuala Lumpur (in front of Metrojaya, BB Plaza)
Yuna usually sells her EP album at her show venues as well. So if you want to check her out here are her upcoming performance dates:

February, 20 2009 08:00 PM -
Festival Tunku Bahiyah
Kompleks Perdanasiswa, Universiti Malaya
Petaling Jaya

March, 7 2009 03:00 PM
Graphic Day
UiTM Lendu
Melaka,

March, 15 2009 08:00 PM
Mosaic Music Festival: Nokia Music Station (Indie Air)
Esplanade Outdoor Theatre
Singapore

So anyways I'm just glad that I finally found a local artist worth supporting. Won't even mind becoming her groupie XP For those living round Gombak area and wishes to purchase her EP, Good News!! A supplier is more than happy to help you. Contact this lovely lady and she'll hook you up. Remember.. buy original. Support the local music scene. Go Yuna!

Greetings to the Year of the Brown Cow/ Ox

The Significance of the Brown Cow

The year of the Ox is associated with domestic trouble that seems to have no solution. The grounded, rational, earth influence of the Ox may bring good fortune to troubled economic times but only with a sustained, well planned effort. The Ox influence brings an aversion to risky credit and quick answers that are not well conceived. The Ox year brings success only through discipline and through hard work. The steady ox is quick to anger when confronted by what seems to be irrational opposition, but the use of reason works well and avoids a charge by the angry bull. There is much danger of war and unrest if diplomacy does not prevail.

The last time the earth Ox was seen as the ruling influence was January 29, 1949 - February 15, 1950. The world suffered a recession in late 1948 and early 1949 (looks like history is repeating itself). The world economy recovered during the year of the ox due to rational decisions and careful planning. By 1951, the recession was over. Many will be searching for a quick solution to the current economic crisis, but the ox favors a well planned, consistent path that will take more time but lay a foundation for long lasting results. The strong earth influence of this year favors a strengthening of the housing market, but risk takers will not find this year favorable. Those who look for long term benefits, have a well thought out plan and are willing to work to see results will find great success.

Baby boomers who were born the last time the brown earth Ox ruled the zodiac celebrate their 60th birthday this year. Those who are influenced by the Ox will have experienced many years of good fortune if the planning, hard work and discipline of the sign were heeded. Those who failed to plan are given a new opportunity this year. If the lessons of the past are integrated, the future brings harmony and good fortune at home and in business.

Lishaznia's Note: So let's take heed of the cow's wisdom - plan well, be rational, be smart and lastly be patient. Barack Obama is well-known individual born in the year of the Cow. Let's see if he displays all the characteristics associated with those born in the year of the Cow.

HOLD YOUR SALIVA!!

I don't know where this DISGUSTING habit originated and frankly I don't care but it has seriously got to STOP!!!

It is NOT FUNNY to be hit by saliva and god knows what else (eew!) while you're happily minding your own business as you wait for the bus or walking along the sidewalk.

IT IS UNHYGIENIC!!

IT IS DISGUSTING!!

IT IS GROSS!!

Did I mention that IT IS DISGUSTING?!!

IT IS A VIOLATION OF PERSONAL SPACE!!

Yes it is A VIOLATION! You do NOT want other people's disgusting, excess bodily fluids oozing on your jeans. And to make matters worse, once the gunk gets on you there's pretty much nothing else you can do but go home and put it in the wash. And the spitter walks off with nothing more than an apology. You know for a fact that he's just going to do it again. It is so infuriating!! It should be made a rule that ALL BODILY FLUIDS MUST REMAIN WITHIN THE PERSON WHEN IN PUBLIC PLACES.

As for spitters, seriously do you think it is cool to spit? Do you think it'll make you look macho? Do you actually think that a girl will get turned on by the fact that you spit everywhere?

THINK AGAIN!! We want men with more class. And salivary glands control.

I think the Malaysian government should learn from the Chinese Republic. Make spitting an offense!! Fine them!! And if they still don't comply, let them rot in jail!

And in come responsibility...

Ever been hotel-hopping?

Going from one hotel to another on behalf of your company. Checking out their rooms, their services. For a short while you have power. You're a king!

The Sales Exec bending over backwards trying to woo you, please. You can practically see the RM sign shining in their eyes.

They know. They know that if they get you, money will start rolling in. 5- digit figure at the very minimum. Commission wise, that's a whole lot.

So have I ever been hotel-hopping?

Nearly.

Responsibility called. And I had to answer.

Adulthood SUCKS.

To Boycott? Or not to Boycott? That is the question.

Will the boycotting of products work? Will it actually make a difference?

Honestly, I don't know.

But for all who have never experienced the sufferings of war, and the pain of losing a loved one, we are often guilty of one thing...

INACTION.

Although Timberland is a publicly traded company, his family holds approximately 47% of the stock and has approximately 81% of the voting power.
----------------------------
17. DESERT EAGLE: Desert Eagles are the only firearms that Israel does not buy from the US or other countries. However, many of the parts of these firearms are imported from other countries and they are merely assembled in Israel. Regardless, Israel prides them as their own and it is strictly an Israeli company.
----------------------------
18. CATERPILLAR: Caterpillar is a company based in Illinois that manufactures large construction equipment such as bulldozers, tractors, various demolition equipment and has a line of "tough guy" clothing apparel. Caterpillar happily supplies Israel with all of its current fleet of D9 and D10 bulldozers, some of the largest armoured bulldozers in the world.

This list was taken from The Schmooze, a site that encourages the Jewish community to support companies that are sympathetic to the Israeli cause. I believe we don't need any more proof than that now do we?

It won't be easy. And major sacrifices will be required but in the end it will be worth it. Be an agent of change. Every little effort will make a difference.

Sicko "Marriage Contract"

Found this on thesmokinggun.com, and it totally blew my mind. A contract like this actually exist?! What has the world come to?

Repulsive "Wifely Expectations" pact emerges in Iowa kidnap case

FEBRUARY 17--USA, as you know, is filled with the deranged. And then there's Travis Frey, a 33-year-old Iowa man who is facing charges that he tried to kidnap his own wife (not to mention a separate child pornography rap). Frey, prosecutors contend, apparently is a rather demanding guy. In fact, he actually drew up a bizarre four-page marriage document--a "Contract of Wifely Expectations"--that sought to establish guidelines for his spouse in terms of hygiene, clothing, and sexual activities. In return for fulfilling certain requirements, Frey (pictured right and below) offered "Good Behavior Days," or GBDs. Each GBD, Frey wrote, could be redeemed by his wife to "get out of doing the things" he requested daily. A copy of the proposed contract, which Frey's wife never signed and later provided to cops, can be found below. While we normally point out the highlights of most documents, there are so many in this demented, and very graphic, contract, we really can't do it justice. So set aside ten minutes--and prepare to be repulsed. (4 pages)

The "Sicko"

Notice the Images that he uses on the font? How sick can this guy get? So ladies, beware! Get to know your man before you marry them. And no matter what you do, or how much you love your guy, read all documents before you sign them. Better yet get yourself a good lawyer and get the lawyer to go through it for you.

Where have all the good men gone?

In support of Nurul's recent devastating heartbreak, I shall dedicate a few of my blog posts for women empowerment. Oh and also to dissing men. Coz that's always fun to do.

This is something I found in MenareJerks.com. Just a little something to get all of you females giggling.

IDEAS FOR WOMEN TO LIVE BY
  1. Don't imagine you can change a man unless he's in diapers.

  2. What do you do if your boyfriend walks-out? You shut the door.

  3. If they put a man on the moon - they should be able to put them all up there.

  4. Never let your man's mind wander - it's too little to be out alone.

  5. Go for younger men. You might as well, they never mature anyway.

  6. Men are all the same - they just have different faces, so that you can tell them apart.

  7. Definition of a bachelor; a man who has missed the opportunity to make some woman miserable.

  8. Women don't make fools of men - most of them are the do-it-yourself type.

  9. Best way to get a man to do something, is to suggest they are too old for it.

  10. Love is blind, but marriage is a real eye-opener.

  11. If you want a committed man, look in a mental hospital.

  12. The children of Israel wandered around the desert for 40 years. Even in biblical times, men wouldn't ask for directions.

  13. If he asks what sort of books you're interested in, tell him checkbooks.

  14. Remember a sense of humor does not mean that you tell him jokes, it means that you laugh at his.

  15. Sadly, all men are created equal.

GAZA: STOP THE BLOODSHED (IIUM Public Talk)

In an effort to create more awareness, my office, the International Institute for Muslim Unity (IIMU) has organised a public talk on the Gaza issue. The invited speaker will be Dr. Chandra Muzaffar, president of the International Movement for a Just World (JUST).

So anyone who is interested to attend this talk, the details are as follows:

Date:
Friday, 9th January 2009

Time:
3pm - 5pm
Venue:
Main Auditorium, IIUM

Just as an added incentive, refreshment (high-tea) will be provided to all. However seats are limited (200 participants).

For more information concerning the talk, just call me, Liana at 03 61965762.

GAZA: STOP THE BLOODSHED

This may not be the most proactive way to act upon this issue but every little effort counts. Just because we're living thousands of miles away from the war scene it doesn't mean that the war won't affect us in any way at all.

So I beseech to all readers. Sign this petition. It is a small step that we all can take to urge the political leaders to come to their senses and stop all the madness and bloodshed. Don't think that one lousy signature will not bring peace to the region, who's to say that it wont.

Just sign it. You have nothing to lose.
